This Valentines Day, London will be playing host to romantic pop up with a twist – every single one of the gifts, cards or cakes on sale will be based on an anatomically correct heart. It is a venture from Miss Cakehead & Medical Illustrator Emily Evans.

The shop will feature a wide range of gifts for those who like their romance with an anatomical twist; around 30 of the the finest arts, crafts and cake makers having been commissioned for the project. Beautiful anatomical heart inspired pieces from jewellery, art prints, cards, embroidery, ceramics to cake, chocloate and anatomical flowers. Saying it with hearts and flowers has never been so scientific!

These fantastic molecular charms by Scientist-turned-artist Raven Hanna have caused quite a storm of late. Being mentioned on a few social media sites has lead to her etsy shop being completely sold out! (which is brilliant).

Here’s some words on her inspiration for the pieces:

“While reading about the science of mood and emotions, I noticed that the same neurotransmitter chemicals kept coming up again and again. It is the different combinations of the mainly the same chemical players that gives us the full spectrum of feelings.

[the pieces] come with six different neurotransmitter charms that you can clip on and off to match you mood (or what you’d prefer your mood to be). 

Included are:
acetylcholine – learning, memory, dreaming
dopamine – love, pleasure, drive
GABA – general relaxant
glutamate – general stimulant
norepinephrine – focus, drive
serotonin – happiness, relaxation, satisfaction”

These are just a few of Armenian photographer Suren Manvelyan‘s human iris images. When looking at the first few, I was amazed at how beautiful the landscape of the iris is and just how it varies in each individual. Then they sort of became a bit spooky and ‘other worldly’. Personal trainer and graphic designer David Staffell designed this t-shirt, it seems it was never put into production despite being on threadless. Shame, I think it’s ace!

This idea from ceramic company The New English is genius. You can commission your own words on one of their custom ceramic hearts. Here’s the story of it’s development;

‘I had developed a new object in the form of a large heart (I carved it when I was laid up with a bad back) which we sent to over 60 artists from around the world to decorate – we then assembled them all for a show in Berlin’

This fierce looking fantastical anatomical heart by illustrator Richey Beckett appears to be made from growling monsters. Fab!!

Knitted anatomy is becoming a mini-trend! This new advertisement for Sudafed decongestant utilises the charm of a knitted sagittal section through the head. I like the ‘flappy’ conchae after the green wool ‘snot’ has reduced.
