January 27, 2013 § Leave a Comment
This Valentines Day, London will be playing host to romantic pop up with a twist – every single one of the gifts, cards or cakes on sale will be based on an anatomically correct heart. It is a venture from Miss Cakehead & Medical Illustrator Emily Evans.
The shop will feature a wide range of gifts for those who like their romance with an anatomical twist; around 30 of the the finest arts, crafts and cake makers having been commissioned for the project. Beautiful anatomical heart inspired pieces from jewellery, art prints, cards, embroidery, ceramics to cake, chocloate and anatomical flowers. Saying it with hearts and flowers has never been so scientific!

Bert Gilbert

I had the pleasure of wearing a Bert Gilbert “Dentists Cuff” on the Eat Your Heart Out shoot a few weeks ago and it’s a heavy piece of kit. Totally amazing. I wasn’t aware of all the other bizarre anatomical pieces that are part of Bert’s collection. Including the wax ear candles above.

Kat Von D’s Wonderland

As you’d expect, there’s a fair amount of weird but wonderful things in Kat Von D’s Wonderland store. Above is a print of an oil painting ‘Kat’s Hands‘ collaboration between Kat and Kevin Llewellyn;
‘The painting on exhibit is oil on panel 24 x 20″ and is a commissioned work of Kat Von D holding a bloody heart. It is a treasured piece depicting a devotion to purity and love. The edition of 100 museum quality archival giclee prints are our most popular as they are signed by both Kat Von D and Kevin Llewellyn. This particular print is unique in that it is an example of artist collaboration between Kat and Kevin and is the exact size of the original painting.’
Her store includes many smaller vintage inspired items;

Finally, for the last day of the ‘Anatomical Christmas Gift Guide’, surely it has to be all that is Merry, although I’m pretty sure if you bought Pandor 60% absinthe your Christmas is more likely to be ‘Messy’.
So you have the drink, now you need the glasses;
How about Bread and Badger’s heart champagne flutes or curved rocks glasses.

Twentysevenpalms is a London based company that makes cushion covers from fabrics sourced from around the world. Their range of ‘Day of the Dead’ fabrics is impressive, but the one that caught my eye at Sunday Upmarket last week was this take on the french ‘Toile de Joie’. Look closely and you’ll se ethe characters are mexican skeletons. I’ve seen the London Toile by Timorous Beasties which is equally brilliant, but this skeleton one is a must-have accessory for the anatomical home. £14 for a cushion cover.
And then of course, there’s pretty much anything by graphic design extraordinaire AK-LH‘s flow collection. Still brilliant!

Rob Whoriskey’s ‘Wisdumm Hurts’ poster is somewhat of a philosophical poster appropriate for all ages.
Or how about a wall sticker by Megan Herbert;
