January 27, 2013 § Leave a Comment
This Valentines Day, London will be playing host to romantic pop up with a twist – every single one of the gifts, cards or cakes on sale will be based on an anatomically correct heart. It is a venture from Miss Cakehead & Medical Illustrator Emily Evans.
The shop will feature a wide range of gifts for those who like their romance with an anatomical twist; around 30 of the the finest arts, crafts and cake makers having been commissioned for the project. Beautiful anatomical heart inspired pieces from jewellery, art prints, cards, embroidery, ceramics to cake, chocloate and anatomical flowers. Saying it with hearts and flowers has never been so scientific!

Cecile Dachary: Crochet organs
November 26, 2012 § 1 Comment
French artist Cecile Dachary makes the most amazing crocheted pieces of art and includes many influenced by the body and anatomy;
‘I’m interested in the representation of the body with the fabric, it is the close relationship between this material and the human. The fabric is a second skin, a body wrap that keeps the imprint of the body that brought. This makes the living tissue, gives it a sensual materiality. The fabric bodyguard memories, whole or fragmented. This memory is kept multiple, moving, disturbing, violent, sensual or erotic. It is pattern or volume. I trace or pattern according to my emotions or my intuition the more figurative expression to a more simplified version of the original, round, through evocative organic volumes. I do not refer only outside but also inside, inventing my own representation of the body, organs and cells for microscopic bacteria, I fantasized images and gives fantastic. I try to express intimacy, the secret inside.’
DeAngel: Blood Splatter Paintings
November 23, 2012 § Leave a Comment
At first glance, I thought these dynamic paintings by DeAngel were someone having been dropped form a great height and inevitably splattered. But given they are called ‘emergining’, I presume, they depict a re-birth rather than death.

Lyndie Dourthe: Anatomie

These meticulously embroidered anatomical treasures were created by Lyndie Dourthe. From fabric skeletons squiched into taxidermy display domes, so tiny embroidered knives with drips of blood on them, her site is worth exploring.
Alex Peck Antique Scientifica: Anatomical Models
November 15, 2012 § 1 Comment
I’m addicted to this scientific antique site. Looking for that perfect antique surgical saw perhaps..? It’s all here.
These two images above are;
Anatomical model heart circa 1890
“A scarce signed and dated 1855 antique anatomical model of the human head by Auzoux. The model is oversized (18″ OAH) and termed greatly enlarged by Auzoux. The half of a human head is quite detailed and dramatic. First generation French Auzoux anatomical models are very desirable.”
“A detailed anatomical model of the human head in mid-section. The life-size model is by Auzoux, Paris, and so marked. It is in excellent condition and is mounted on a later base.”
Wellcome Collection: Death, A Self-portrait
November 14, 2012 § Leave a Comment
Opening tomorrow is the new exhibition at the Wellcome Collection, Euston, London: Death, A Self-portrait (15 November 2012 – 24 February 2013).
I attended the Private view last night to get a provisional glimpse of the exhibition assembled by Richard Harris (the main contributor of works to the exhibition).
“the collection is spectacularly diverse, including art works, historical artefacts, scientific specimens and ephemera from across the world. Rare prints by Rembrandt, Dürer and Goya will be displayed alongside anatomical drawings, war art and antique metamorphic postcards; human remains will be juxtaposed with Renaissance vanitas paintings and twentieth century installations celebrating Mexico’s Day of the Dead” [from the site]
You can see a comprehensive selection of the artworks in the exhibition here.
